Tanglewood Marionettes
Founded in 1993, Tanglewood Marionettes is a nationally touring marionette theater based in New England. Large, beautifully hand-crafted marionettes, colorful sets, and integrated lighting and sound create a fully immersive theatrical experience.
What To Expect
Greek myths have always had a strong appeal to children of all ages. This “Perseus and Medusa” production is an original creation of Tanglewood Marionettes. It took them over a year to build, not to mention the research that went into it before and during. Just designing and building the marionettes, props, scenery and special effects took six months.
The scenery for this play is in the form of a giant scroll. Using a scrolling set allowed them to keep with the “ancient world” theme, and to experiment with some of the motion effects that are possible with a side-scrolling set.

The Puppets
The puppets in this play are quite large, and therefore quite heavy. To lighten the puppets as much as possible, they had to hollow out many of the arms and legs. The dog puppet Cerberus had to be large enough to accommodate three heads.
Resources
The Study Guide includes Further Reading suggestions for students and teachers. It also includes a Language Arts section with suggested writing exercises. Also covered are the differences between Sparta and Athens in terms of education of youth. There will be a Q&A chat as well so your student will learn much about puppets and puppetry.
Recommended Audience
This webinar event will probably be enjoyed most by students in grades 3-8. Like many of our programs, however, we know that older students and adults of all ages will enjoy both the performance and the educational aspect of this presentation.
